U.S. button maker use the "line" unit of length to measure buttons. This unit is equal to 1/40 inch or 0.635 mm. It was probably introduced by German immigrants, who used since ninth century a different version of "ligne" equal to 1/40 inch to measure buttons.

DTP point (pt) is the desktop publishing point used by typographers and printers. It is defined to be equal to 1/72 of the Anglo-Saxon compromise inch of 1959 (25.4 mm), which is approximately 0.0139 inch or 352.8 micrometers. DTP point is sometimes called PostScript point also.
