Ri is a traditional Japanese unit of distance, which is sometimes called the "Japanese league", because it is similar to the European league. One ri is equal to 12 960 shaku (one shaku equals to 10/33 m). This is about 3927 meters.

Marathon is a long distance foot race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers. The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger, who was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that Greeks won Persians in the battle of Marathon, in which he had just fought. Pheidippides ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "ΝΕΝΙΚΗΚΑΜΕΝ" (We have won.) before collapsing and dying.
