The Metonic cycle or Enneadecaeteris, is a particular approximate common multiple of the tropical year and the synodic (lunar) month. The Greek astronomer Meton of Athens observed that a period of 19 tropical years is almost exactly equal to 235 synodic months, and rounded to full days counts 6940 days.

This unit was named "Svedberg", to honor the Swedish chemist Theodor Svedberg (1884-1971), who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1926 for the invention of the ultracentrifuge and its use in studying the properties of colloids.
